Here at LittleOak, we believe that nature is our greatest provider and as parents, we all hope that our children will grow up in a world that is abundant, flourishing and full of life. That’s why we’ve pulled together some little suggestions to reduce our impact on Mother Earth. Read on for six tips for living more sustainably.
Shop mindfully
It’s no secret that mass consumption places a heavy burden on our planet. The constant production of more depletes and pollutes our ecosystems, while feeding demand that leads to ever-growing waste. While a shopping spree can be tempting, choosing to shop with intention makes a real difference. Opt for vintage or pre-loved treasures where you can. And when you do buy new, look to ethical, sustainable brands that are transparent about their environmental commitments.
Swap or donate
Children grow up quick. And right before our eyes, they’ll no longer fit the adorable little outfits we bought them not too long ago. Sadly, discarded textiles often end up in landfill. Instead, consider passing on clothes to friends and family or donating them locally so your little one’s pre-loved items can be enjoyed all over again.
Choose sustainable products
Pay attention to eco-labels and certifications that highlight a brand’s commitment to protecting the planet. Our Palm Oil Free certification, for instance, is an internationally recognised certification that reflects our promise to providing the most clean, natural nutrition, while also taking conscious steps to protect our rainforests.
Reduce food waste and start a compost
We love this one. Starting a compost not only turns kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich soil for your garden, but it’s also an interactive way to teach your children about caring for Mother Earth. By composting, you’re able to enrich your gardening soil, reduce your reliance on chemical fertilisers and cut greenhouse gas emissions, all while giving back to the earth – it's a win-win!
Make your own cleaning supplies
Making your own cleaning supplies can make your household more green by minimising packaging waste and reducing the amount of chemicals released into the environment. It also saves money! Paediatric Nurse, Nicky Skinner, talks us through easy, natural cleaning alternatives on our podcast, This Little Life. Listen to more of this discussion on this episode here.
Eat less meat
Reducing meat consumption can help conserve water, protect land resources and reduce climate impact. According to Greenpeace UK, the climate impact of meat is roughly equivalent to “all the driving and flying of every car, truck and plane in the world.” Every family’s needs are unique, and the most important thing is choosing what feels right for yours. If you are open to doing so, integrating one vegetarian meal a week can make a meaningful difference for our planet.
While the solutions for the climate crisis lie with governments, policy makers, and corporations, our everyday choices still carry weight. Small, mindful actions add up, and when many of us come together and commit to these promises, the impact multiplies.
